The Stock Market Game (SMG) helps students connect classroom content through a real-world investing simulation and experience. SMG gives Minnesota students in grades 4-12 the opportunity to invest a virtual $100,000 in stocks, mutual funds, and bonds. Educators incorporate SMG into their curriculum to teach their students business, math, economics, financial literacy, and critical thinking skills as they research and collaborate to make smart investment decisions. The hands-on, team-oriented style of the program offers a flexible way to engage students in gaining a richer understanding of the U.S. economic system, current events, and teamwork.
Teachers who use SMG with students do not need to be experts in or have a background in finance – BestPrep provides training, resources, and ongoing support to make SMG easy to facilitate. Once registered, teachers have access to a variety of lessons, videos, activities, and other resources. Teachers participating in SMG can also request an industry professional to visit their classroom and speak with students about a variety of investing and financial literacy topics.
At the end of each session, students on teams with top-ranked portfolios are recognized at an awards ceremony for the Fall, Spring, and Year Long sessions, which can often be a highlight of the students’ experiences.

2023-24 Session Dates:
- Fall: September 5 – December 1, 2023
- Year Long: September 5, 2023 – April 19, 2024
- Spring: January 22 – May 3, 2024
- Late Spring: March 4 – May 24, 2024
Enhance your students’ learning experience by requesting to have an industry professional visit your classroom to talk more about the stock market, investing, or another financial topic of your choosing. You can also request speakers to talk about careers in investing and financial planning.

BestPrep offers 1-on-1 and group training sessions to help you better understand the program, resources, and easily get started using SMG with students. BestPrep staff is also available to provide onboarding for your students. Training sessions and student onboarding are scheduled based on your availability.
Typically, it costs educators and schools a small fee to use The Stock Market Game with students. However, thanks to funding from sponsors like Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America, Charles Schwab Foundation, FINRA Investor Education Foundation, and RBC Wealth Management, team fees will be waived for the 2023-24 school year. Once you register for SMG, you have instant access to the Teacher Support Center, which has dozens of lessons, activities, and other resources to help you easily facilitate SMG. Subject areas for students in grades 4-12 include math, social studies, English language arts, family and consumer science, reading, writing, gifted and talented, financial literacy, communications, technology, economics, and business.

About the SIFMA Foundation
The SIFMA Foundation is the national administrator of The Stock Market Game and is dedicated to providing financial education for people of all ages through innovative programs that promote financial independence. The SIFMA Foundation also administers InvestWrite and Capitol Hill Challenge programs through SMG. InvestWrite is an essay competition for students participating in SMG in the Fall and Spring. Capitol Hill Challenge is an exciting national financial education competition for junior and senior high schools that connects participating SMG classrooms with a member of congress.
