BestPrep’s Minnesota Business Venture (MBV) program is a week-long summer camp that helps high school students explore careers, build leadership skills, and gain real world business experience through hands-on learning.

This year is unlike most. Not only is MBV celebrating its 45th anniversary, but we have three former students as Resident Business Leaders (RBL) – Tim Mercil, Lizzy Nyoike, and Caleb Potratz!

Tim has been involved with MBV for 25 years, including 21 years as an RBL. Before this role, he volunteered as an MBV CEO (student leader of the group), MBV Operations Associate, and even volunteered as the program’s dorm monitor! Tim has also served on the MBV Advisory Committee, which meets throughout the year to discuss curriculum updates and program improvements. Tim sees camp as an important part of his leadership journey, and he believes the experience has helped him become a stronger professional and person. As he put it, I learn something new every year.”

For Lizzy Nyoike, who is serving as an RBL second timeMBV helped her step outside her comfort zone and connect with students from across the state. Reflecting on her experience, she shared, It forced me as an introverted person to really step out of my bubble and meet other people. She also credits MBV with strengthening her teamwork and critical-thinking skills through challenges and collaboration.

Caleb Potratz is now in his seventh summer serving as an RBL. Before this role, he volunteered as an MBV Communication Specialist and Intern, a competitive leadership position given to returning studentsHe has also served on the MBV Advisory CommitteeWhen thinking about the program’s impact, Caleb highlightmentorship and personal growth. He encourages students to embrace new opportunities, explaining that It’s not necessarily a straight path and that being open to change can lead to unexpected success.

All three noted that the campers themselves continue to teach them valuable lessons every year. MBV’s impact goes far beyond one week; influencing how participants lead, learn, and connect throughout their lives.
