This winter, Liam Geraghty, a senior at East Ridge High School, participated in BestPrep’s eMentors program with his AVID class. He was matched with Dan Schultz, Principal Sourcing Manager from H.B. Fuller, and exchanged weekly messages discussing school, goal setting, teamwork, and much more. Liam and his classmates also had the opportunity to meet their mentors in-person and see their place of work.
We got the chance to connect with Liam and learn more about his experience with his mentor from H.B. Fuller!
Tell us more about the class you’re participating in eMentors through.
The class I’m participating in eMentors through is AVID, where we’ve been taught essential skills such as staying organized, time management, and teamwork. These skills are reflected through our eMentors, who help us understand how to apply them in a work environment.
What are your educational and career goals?
My long-term goal for education is to earn a degree in Actuarial Science and to eventually become a full-time actuary. Having a plan for my future helps a lot, but I am still trying to keep an open mind in case I find something that I enjoy more.
Where does your mentor work and what do they do?
My mentor works at H.B. Fuller with a job in strategic sourcing, responsible for finding and managing suppliers that provide the company with materials. Although I had heard of H.B. Fuller, I never really knew what they did, much less what strategic sourcing entailed.
What has been your favorite part about eMentors?
My favorite part about eMentors has been gaining a feel for employment life through the perspective of my mentor. Having this guiding vision provided by my mentor was reassuring and answered many of my questions.
What is a specific moment that stands out in your eMentors experience?
A moment that stood out to me during my eMentors experience was our tour of H.B. Fuller. The tour was a fascinating learning experience, and I gained a lot from the presentations they gave.
Has eMentors influenced your future career choices?
My mentor helped validate my aspirations to be an Actuary, while also encouraging me to take opportunities, learn about other jobs, meet people, and explore all my options.
Why should other students participate in eMentors?
I think other students should participate in eMentors because it’s a great opportunity to gain a better understanding of how to actually apply the skills we’re learning in AVID and school overall. It gives us a window into the business world, and work life in general. We get an abundance of helpful information and advice, while also having any questions we have answered.
