Volunteer with a teacher by being a Business Partner

Would you like to have the opportunity to show teachers the skills your company is looking for in the next generation of professionals? As a half-day Business Partner volunteer for BestPrep’s Technology Integration Workshop (TIW) you can showcase the skills your company is looking for and create a personal connection with a school and educator.

TIW is a professional development opportunity for educators interested in integrating technology and workplace skills into their curriculum. Crucial to the success of the TIW is the opportunity for teachers to experience a workplace very different from their own, gaining insight into the careers and workplace skills that employers will be looking for from their students in the future.

“[By hosting a teacher in a job shadow] I learned that educators really enjoy getting real life examples and experiences to bring back to the classroom.”

John Manders, Deloitte & Touche LLP

Business Partners meet with their assigned teacher over lunch, provided by BestPrep, at the University of St. Thomas downtown Minneapolis on Monday, July 28 from 12-1 PM. The following day, Tuesday, July 29, teachers venture out to the workplace of their Business Partner for a half-day job shadow from 1-4 PM. While on-site, Business Partners share career experience and knowledge of their company culture and employee expectations. Many educators are in interested in learning about all aspects of a company!

During the job shadow, Business Partners are encouraged to explain how their department and position fit into the company and its mission and to show the teacher a project that they are working on currently. A tour of the building features and employee services is often very eye-opening for the teachers and provides them with meaningful information to share with students. The job shadow can be a great opportunity for a team or team building, as Business Partners are encouraged to schedule a meeting with colleagues or other Business Partners to provide a variety of knowledge and experiences with the educator.

“I am grateful to my 3M business partner for making the job shadowing experience insightful and worthwhile! I walked away excited about sharing my learning experience with students and colleagues.”

–Christina Babadjanian, Harding High School in St. Paul and 2013 TIW Participant
